Analysis of Crashes in Work Zone Queues

Contracting Agency: Southeastern Transportation Center, University of Tennessee

PI: Scott Washburn, Ph.D.

The overall objective of this research project is to examine crashes that occur in freeway work zones, and in particular, the crashes that occur in the work-zone queues. The analysis will be undertaken using crash data obtained from both long- and short-form reports obtained from the Florida Highway Patrol. Crashes occurring in the vicinity of the I-95 Trout River Bridge reconstruction project are of interest. The crash data will be supplemented with traffic data for the same corridor to explicitly identify the crashes occurring in queues leading to the work-zone. Statistical and spatial (i.e., GIS mapping) analyses will be undertaken to identify relationships between the type of crashes and the traffic-flow (queuing) characteristics at work zones.
